ABOUT GIUSEPPE IMPROTA

Upbringing: it was not easy.

My story is not very conventional, so it might be worth reading it if you have the time.
Also, this is a small summary of the things I have done during these years. People always seem very surprised by the amount of things I have managed to do and accomplish so far.
And they still ask me how I am able to do so many things. Maybe they should enroll in some of my mentoring sessions, except, most people do not want to put the work it takes.

I was born in the south of Italy, in a city called Napoli (internationally known as Naples).
Yes, that’s where Pizza was invented.

Over there, there is a lot of criminality of all kinds, mafia and camorra, and in general a lot of places where you DO NOT want to be.
On the other side, it is an incredible city: full of life, and beautiful like very few places in the world. The good people living there have incredible hearts and they are always willing to help, laugh about their problems, and keep life on the “happy” side, all the time.
And trust me, some of these people have very serious problems.

I have now lived in a few different countries, and I am always reminded of how safe, shielded, and relatively easy life is in some of them.
This is surely true here in Vancouver, Canada, where I currently live.

Growing up, my family didn’t have many resources. There were always a lot of arguments about money and so, every time there was something to buy I would try to avoid asking, as much as possible.
That included school books or trips, maybe buying an extra package of cookies or things that I really liked and wanted to improve upon that required any sort of investment.
Yes, that created some childhood traumas in me, but that’s a video for my YouTube channel and another time.

The only possible thing I could do was to get to work and make some money myself, to avoid being a burden for my family.
I did all sorts of jobs but what I was really good at was assembling computers and doing IT assistance.
In the meanwhile, I was learning more and more about my real passion: 3D Computer Graphics, which, at the time, was pretty unheard of in Italy.
I was determined to work for the Visual Effects industry and I knew that it was my first life goal to get that done.
I kept learning it from foreign magazines that I would buy whenever I found them (they were rare) and eventually, I started being pretty good at it.
I started working professionally when I was 17 years old, opened my first company with two other older people when I was 19 years old, worked in the industry in Italy for about 12 years, and then worked another 13 years abroad.
It was not easy, at all.
I also almost had a nervous breakdown when I had my company, which pushed me to quit it after only 3 years of owning it.

There were always difficulties, but my purpose was always in my head and I was determined to reach it.
Even if the kind of jobs were not exactly what I wanted to do, because of the size and the kind of work that you could do in Italy vs, for example, Los Angeles at the time. But I learned as much as I could from anything I was doing, and that was a win right there. I just did not know at the time, but I do know now.

One anecdote is that for a period of time I rented a small house in a very small town near a Lake and I had opened my photograph gallery in the main square of the tow.
It never took off, because I ran out of money before I could really start making it work properly, but it was one of the most important experiences of my life, and also living in a place like that gave me perspective on how food should taste and how a simple life can actually be very fulfilling and make one happy.

2: The London struggle

When I moved from Italy to London, I was married. I was 28 years old. My now ex-wife was supposed to come to London after a few months. I went there first to get familiar with the new city, make some money, and then rent a place for us.
I left Italy because I was not making enough money there with my job. I could not sustain my family, and also I wanted to work in bigger companies to gain the necessary experience to advance my career.

Things did not exactly work the way I expected and my ex-wife decided to leave me for a friend/colleague while I was away. So I was in London alone, in a studio apartment where you could barely walk three steps wall to wall and that had a cooking range, bed, and wardrobe all in the same room. The bathroom was separated, at least, and had a tiny shower.

So now I am in London, for the first time in a big city away from home, alone, with the pressure of the divorce, and from work as I was in one of the top 5 companies in the world and I had no idea what I was doing.
On top of that I was broke to the bones, to the point that for the first month while waiting for my first paycheck, I was a guest at a friend’s house.
I had to walk home at -10 degrees, under the snow because I did not have even money to pay for a taxi.

Somehow I went through the divorce and focused more on work and on my workouts.
I had panic attacks, anxiety, and almost got badly depressed, but a couple of good friends, martial arts, and boxing saved me from rock bottom.
I would train 2-3 hours a day so that I was too exhausted to get to bed and sleep, which was the only way I would in fact sleep.

As the months went by, things got better, I started to get some good satisfaction work-wise got into another relationship with a very sweet girl, and eventually I was asked to move to Vancouver for a job, to which I said yes.
The reasons that brought me to Canada were nature and exploration.
I had always going around in my one and only car at the time, my 1987 Suzuki Samura for over 10 years. I explored most European coasts and unmarked locations (no Google Maps, no Garmin stuff at the time, just printed maps). I had to sell the little 4x4 when I left to London, and that broke my heart.
Going to Canada meant I would make more money and I could build another car and start exploring again, which is exactly what I did.

3: The Canadian life

I have never done only one job. I have always had my own business on the side and my passions that I would always find time for. My passions are usually also jobs, as I get so much into them that I then end up taking paid jobs. I just can’t help but try to get as good as I can at everything I do.

One very important experience I have had in these 20 plus years of experience, has been mentoring and teaching.
I have mentored many students and thought many classes in private schools and Universities, and there is nothing that has fulfilled me more than that.

In many cases, I have helped the mentee not just with their career goals, but I have given them the necessary tools to succeed and move forward no matter what would happen.
I take good pride of that, because it makes me full of joy that what I thought them helped them, even if just a little.

Experience

“Do not just learn: DO!”

I have over 20 years of experience in most of the areas of filmmaking and 3D production, including VR, commercials, stop motion, feature films, animated feature films, and TV episodic productions.

I started as a 3D industrial designer and then moved on to the media production world.
I founded my first company at the age of 19 while attending the Art Academy in Naples (in Italy, where I am originally from).
After working in the industry in my home country for about ten years, I went abroad with the intention of challenging myself with more difficult endeavors. That was almost 16 year ago.

During the years, I have helped other companies build their post-production pipeline and I have worked in various roles. I have progressed from a 3D generalist to specializing in Lighting and Look Development and finally directing.
I am currently the Studio Director of Photography at Bardel Entertainment Inc. in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
I also teach a few classes at KPU University, and I privately mentor a handful of students to help them reach their goals.

I have also worked as a professional freelance photographer and as a cinematographer for various sizes of productions and indie films.
It started as a means to earn extra money but quickly developed into a passion (and then a full-time job) that has never left me and has immensely helped me in my 3D career.

At first, I was involved in commercials, weddings, events, and fashion shoots.
I then transitioned into fine art photography with a focus on wildlife, nature, and automotive subjects.

I have recently started my filmmaking and content creation company: Improductions, where all my skills converge with a great team of people into creating powerful content for many different clients.

TRAVELING AND EXPLORING

“Not traveling is like reading only the first page of a book”

Traveling is a huge passion of mine, though I prefer to drive wherever I go.
I love to drive fast race cars as much as slowly enjoy a beautiful wild landscape in my 4x4.

I have driven the wild unpaved routes of Europe for 10 years.
When I moved to Vancouver I started traveling around the US and Canada in search of animals and landscapes to take pictures of.

I love to explore roads and areas hidden from most people and to spend time in the wilderness.

Over the years, I have built a few expedition vehicles to tackle my adventures: a small Suzuki Samurai, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, two Jeep Wrangler JL, and a couple of Delica L400 4×4 vans.
In the process, I have learned a lot about electrical systems, woodworking, mechanical work, and much more.
Currently, I own a Jeep Gladiator with a trailer that allows me to basecamp in comfort for longer trips and work remotely.

I have come to realize that immersing myself in the wilderness provides an opportunity for me to recharge after a long and usually complicated and stressful production.
The images I shoot during these expeditions become beautiful high-quality fine art prints that people buy online.

Another big passion of mine is racing and motorcycles. I have a racing license and I also like to bring my own vehicles on track battling against the time.
My passion for cars (and vehicles in general) got me to start taking pictures of them to have a printed memory of each of them.
This became a job as well where I take studio photographs of people’s cars (or other vehicles) and make them into high-quality high-tech prints for them to hang on the walls of their mancave, garage, office, or as a present to their friends.

This is a very popular product for people who love their cars and want a genuine and unique memory of their vehicles.

EDUCATION

“Education is the one thing nobody can take away from you”

All my studies took place in Italy.

In high school, I enrolled in a special Computer Science program where we also learned computer programming.
I could not afford a specialized film school abroad and there wasn’t much at the time in Italy for VFX, so I ended up attending the Fine Art Academy of Naples where I specialized in traditional Painting and Set Dressing.

All my experience in computer graphics, both 2D and 3D is completely self-thought and so are my Photography and Cinematography skills.

I have taken various certifications over the years, like the Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop and Premiere, and collaborated as a speaker with important well-known brands of the 3D industry, like Newtek and The Foundry.

I have also studied music composition and piano for over 11 years, though I never managed to complete the program.

I like to join classes of all kinds and attend as many workshops as I can, whenever I can take time off from my busy work schedule.
Learning is really what makes life interesting for me and I am always looking forward to learning something new.
